Responsibilities of plasterer — What does that include?

Plasterers work indoors and outdoors, on new buildings and during renovations. They create smooth, insulated or decorative surfaces that protect and beautify buildings.

Central activities:

  • Indoor and outdoor plastering of walls and ceilings
  • Installation of insulation, plaster supports and façade systems
  • Renovation and restoration of old buildings
  • Smoothing, structuring and designing surfaces
  • Assembly of stucco elements, decorative profiles and acoustic systems
  • Control of flatness, adhesion and material quality
  • Cooperation with painters, façade builders and drywall builders

Education: Plasterer EFZ or plasterer EBA

The training combines technical know-how with precision craftsmanship and creativity. It is aimed at people with sensitivity, endurance and a sense of form and function.

Plasterer practitioner EBA (2 years):

  • Teaching practice: basic plastering work, preparation, mixing materials
  • Vocational School: Materials Science, Occupational Safety, Basics of Insulation Technology
  • ÜK: Puttying, reinforcing, cleaning technology, smoothing
  • Degree: Swiss Professional certificate plasterer practitioner EBA

Plaster/EFZ (3 years):

  • In-depth training in interior and exterior plaster systems, façade technology and surface finishing
  • Vocational school: building materials science, statics, thermal insulation, renovation technology
  • ÜK: Machine plastering, stucco work, insulation and acoustics
  • Degree: Swiss Certificate of proficiency plasterer EFZ

Continuing education & career opportunities

After basic training, there are many paths open — from foreman to construction management to self-employment.

Possible continuing education:

  • Foreman or plasterer
  • Technician HF construction planning or building envelope
  • Restorer or specialist in façade design
  • Entrepreneur or master plasterer and painting craft
  • Continuing education in energy efficiency and building renovation

Salary as a plasterer in Switzerland

Plasterers benefit from clearly regulated wages in the extension works' CLA. Compensation depends on experience, specialisation and area of application.

Indicative values:

  • Learners: staggered according to apprenticeship year
  • After completion of apprenticeship: approx. CHF 4,800 — 5'300/month
  • With experience or specialization: approx. CHF 5'300 — 6'200/month
  • Foreman or polisher: CHF 6,500+/month

In addition, allowances are possible for façade work, outdoor use or special surface techniques.
